THE SIX PATTERNS
The six metabolic patterns of midlife.
Almost every midlife weight stall fits one of these. Find yours and the reset becomes obvious. Get it wrong and you keep trying harder against a system that needs a different input entirely.
PATTERN 01
01 OF 06The Blood Sugar Rollercoaster.
Your body may not need another diet. It may need steadier energy signals first.
Glucose swings up after refined carbs and crashes mid-afternoon. Cravings, caffeine reliance and evening grazing are downstream of the same instability – not separate problems.
THE SIGNAL
Unstable energy, cravings and inconsistent meal timing.
WHY IT SHOWS UP IN MIDLIFE
Aim for 25–35g protein within an hour of waking. Add fibre – a piece of fruit, a cup of veg, or a tablespoon of seeds. This single move flattens the curve more than any diet rule.
THE FIRST RESET
Protein and fibre at breakfast and lunch.
Before cutting calories harder. Track only one thing this week: protein at breakfast. Almost everything else gets easier once that's in place.
WHAT DOESN'T WORK
Coffee-only mornings, late carb-heavy lunches, and 4pm sugar are the three biggest drivers of this pattern. They feel productive in the moment but cost you the evening.
PATTERN 02
02 OF 06The Under-Fuelled Exerciser.
Trains hard, eats clean, body refuses to change. The thing nobody tells you: you may not be eating enough.
Under-fuelling triggers a metabolic protective response. The body lowers thyroid output, drops body temperature, protects fat stores. Effort goes up; results go down.
THE SIGNAL
You may be training regularly but not fuelling enough to support muscle, recovery and metabolism.
WHY IT SHOWS UP IN MIDLIFE
Add 200–300 kcal per training day from protein and starchy carbs. Stop treating clean eating as restriction. Strength and recovery need calories, not just discipline.
THE FIRST RESET
Protein, training fuel and recovery meals.
Aim for 1.6–2.0g protein per kg body weight, split across the day. Within 60 minutes of training: 30g protein + a starchy carb.
WHAT DOESN'T WORK
More cardio, longer fasts, cutting calories further all deepen the problem. The body reads this as scarcity and holds tighter.
PATTERN 03
03 OF 06Cortisol Load.
Wired and tired. The fix isn't more discipline – it's downshifting the nervous system.
Chronic stress keeps cortisol elevated, which keeps blood glucose elevated, which drives belly fat storage. The 3am waking, the wired-but-tired feeling, the caffeine reliance – same root.
THE SIGNAL
High stress, poor recovery and inconsistent sleep may be making weight and energy harder to manage.
WHY IT SHOWS UP IN MIDLIFE
Protect the first hour after waking – no phone, no email, just light and breakfast. Move caffeine to after breakfast. Wind-down ritual at 9pm.
THE FIRST RESET
Sleep rhythm, caffeine timing and recovery habits.
One change this week: phone out of the bedroom. That alone shifts sleep architecture more than most supplements.
WHAT DOESN'T WORK
Harder workouts and alcohol as a wind-down both make 3am waking worse. The fix is downshift, not push through.
PATTERN 04
04 OF 06Hormone Transition.
The body you had in your 30s isn't coming back – but the one you can build now is better.
Perimenopause begins as early as 40. Oestrogen and progesterone fluctuate then decline. Body composition shifts from hip/thigh to waist. The old playbook stops working not because you've slipped – because the biology changed.
THE SIGNAL
Midlife hormonal changes may be affecting body composition, sleep, mood, cravings and waist gain.
WHY IT SHOWS UP IN MIDLIFE
Strength training preserves muscle and bone. Protein (1.6–2.0g/kg) supports both. Sleep recovery is harder and matters more. HRT (if right for you, with your GP) is layered on top of, not instead of, these foundations.
THE FIRST RESET
Protein, resistance training, blood sugar stability and sleep support.
Two resistance sessions. 30g protein at breakfast. One screen-free evening. Notice what shifts.
WHAT DOESN'T WORK
Low-cal + lots of cardio is now actively counterproductive. So is skipping breakfast. So is alcohol most nights.
PATTERN 05
05 OF 06Digestion & Bloating.
The gut becomes louder in midlife – and over-restriction usually makes it worse.
Stomach acid declines with age. Oestrogen affects gut motility. Most 'intolerances' are functional changes, not actual allergies. The fix is rarely cutting more out.
THE SIGNAL
Digestive symptoms may be affecting comfort, food choices, consistency and confidence.
WHY IT SHOWS UP IN MIDLIFE
Eat at the same times for 7 days. Track only meal time, mood, and digestion. Patterns emerge that no elimination diet would reveal.
THE FIRST RESET
Meal simplicity, eating rhythm and symptom tracking.
Three meals, same times, same simple structure. Note symptoms morning and evening. You'll see the pattern by day five.
WHAT DOESN'T WORK
Cutting out more foods, aggressive cleanses, eating on the go all make it worse. The gut wants rhythm and calm, not battle.
PATTERN 06
06 OF 06The Muscle Gap.
The most under-recognised pattern – and the one with the longest payback.
Sarcopenia starts in the 30s and accelerates after menopause. Most women lose 3–8% of muscle per decade from 30. Less muscle = less glucose uptake = more belly fat storage = lower metabolic rate.
THE SIGNAL
Loss of muscle stimulus, low protein or poor recovery may be reducing metabolic resilience.
WHY IT SHOWS UP IN MIDLIFE
Two resistance sessions a week. 30–40g protein, three times daily. Progress the weight. This is the single biggest lever for midlife body composition.
THE FIRST RESET
Resistance training, protein and progressive strength habits.
Doesn't have to be a gym. Bands, dumbbells, bodyweight progressions all work – what matters is progression week to week.
WHAT DOESN'T WORK
Cardio-only, light-weights-high-reps without progression, protein only at dinner – all under-deliver. Cardio is great for cardiovascular health, weak for body composition.
